Tripura, a state in northeastern India, has seen a significant increase in tourism in recent years, according to the India Tourism Data Compendium 2025 released by the Ministry of Tourism. The report shows that both domestic and foreign tourist arrivals have surged, indicating a growing interest in the region as a travel destination.
In 2024, Tripura welcomed 0.601 million domestic tourists, a remarkable 64.07% increase from the previous year. Similarly, foreign tourist arrivals also rose by 36.15%, with 0.091 million visitors in 2024 compared to 0.067 million in 2023. This growth has solidified Tripura as the second-most visited northeastern state by foreign tourists, trailing only behind Sikkim.
Sushanta Chowdhury, the Tourism Minister of Tripura, attributed this growth to the government’s efforts to improve tourism infrastructure and facilities in the state. He mentioned that the government has been focused on developing tourist spots that were previously neglected, and recently met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to discuss tourism projects that are expected to be sanctioned soon.
Chowdhury also highlighted the government’s plans to upgrade tourist lodges, aiming to enhance the experience for visitors and increase revenue generation. This investment in tourism infrastructure reflects the state’s commitment to boosting the tourism sector and driving economic growth.
Overall, the latest tourism data reaffirms Tripura’s growing appeal as a travel destination in the Northeast, signaling potential opportunities for further economic development through the tourism industry. As the state continues to invest in tourism initiatives, it is poised to attract even more visitors in the coming years.
