AGARTALA: A sense of deep anxiety and fear has gripped dozens of families residing near the Howrah Bridge area following the administration’s move to dismantle houses to facilitate the ongoing Howrah River Embankment and Riverfront Development Project. Fearing the loss of their hearth and home, members of approximately 40 affected families reached the Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office today to seek urgent intervention.
Protest and Deputation to SDM
The residents, who have lived in the vicinity of the Howrah River for decades, gathered at the SDM office premises earlier this afternoon. A four-member representative team, led by Uttam Saha, met with Sadar SDM Manik Lal Das to submit a formal memorandum.
The residents argued that while they understand the importance of flood protection and the “Smart City” project, the sudden demolition notices have left them with nowhere to go.
“We are not against development, but we are terrified of being rendered homeless overnight. Our lives and livelihoods are tied to this area. We need a clear rehabilitation plan and compensation before our roofs are taken away,” Uttam Saha told the media.
High-Level Dialogue at DM Office
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, SDM Manik Lal Das directed the matter for a more comprehensive discussion. Subsequently, the representatives were called to the Conference Hall of the West Tripura District Magistrate (DM) Office.
The meeting, which lasted for over an hour, involved:
- Identification of Land: Discussion on whether the occupied land is under the jurisdiction of the Water Resources Department or the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC).
- Flood Safety vs. Habitation: Officials explained that the strengthening of the embankment is critical to preventing the perennial flooding of Agartala city, which necessitates the removal of structures within the “danger zone.”
- Rehabilitation Assurance: The administration reportedly assured the families that their grievances would be reviewed “sympathetically” and that the government would explore alternative housing or compensation options for those with valid documents.
Residents Brief the Media
Emerging from the DM office after the long deliberation, the delegation addressed the press. While they appeared slightly relieved by the administration’s willingness to talk, the “panic” remains until a written assurance is provided.
OC Prajit Malakar and other security officials were seen monitoring the area around the SDM and DM offices to maintain law and order during the protest. The residents have warned that if a “just and fair” rehabilitation package is not announced soon, they will be forced to intensify their agitation to protect their families.
The Howrah Riverfront project, valued at over ₹100 crore, is currently in its final stages of embankment reinforcement, but the human cost of this urban transformation has now become a major focal point for the city administration.
