AGARTALA: The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) observed the 35th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi with due solemnity and deep respect today. To mark the day, which is nationwide observed as National Anti-Terrorism Day, a solemn memorial service was organized at the state party headquarters at Congress Bhavan in Agartala.
The commemoration was attended by veteran Congress leader and MLA Gopal Chandra Roy, alongside a host of senior organizational heads, frontal wing leaders, and party loyalists.
Paying Floral Tributes to a Visionary Leader
The memorial program commenced in the morning with the hoisting of the party flag at half-mast, followed by the rendering of patriotic songs. Leaders and party workers stood in a long queue to offer floral tributes at the beautifully decorated portrait of the late Prime Minister. A two-minute silence was also observed to honor his ultimate sacrifice for the integrity of the nation.
Key Highlights of the Event:
- Anti-Terrorism Pledge: In alignment with national protocols, Congress leaders and workers took a collective pledge to oppose all forms of terrorism and violence that threaten the democratic fabric of India.
- Remembering the Architect of Digital India: Speakers at the event highlighted Rajiv Gandhi’s historic contributions, particularly his vision in introducing telecommunication and computer revolutions to India, and lowering the voting age to 18 to empower the youth.
“His Vision Guided Modern India”: MLA Gopal Chandra Roy
Addressing the gathering of party workers and media personnel, senior legislator Gopal Chandra Roy reflected on the lasting legacy of the late leader, emphasizing that his assassination by a suicide bomber on this day in 1991 was a loss from which the country is still recovering.
”Today, we remember a leader who gave his life to protect the unity and diversity of our motherland. Rajiv Gandhi was not just a politician; he was a visionary who pulled India into the 21st century by laying the foundation for our IT sector and decentralizing power to rural bodies through the Panchayati Raj amendments.
At a time when divisive forces are attempting to disrupt our social harmony, his ideals of peace, technological progress, and youth empowerment remain our guiding light. We re-dedicate ourselves today to fight against the forces of hatred and terror,” MLA Gopal Chandra Roy stated during his address.
Frontal Wings Reaffirm Ideological Stand
The event also saw significant participation from the Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress, Youth Congress, and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). Nodal leaders urged the younger generation of party workers to study Rajiv Gandhi’s vision of local self-governance and to actively counter extremist ideologies on social and political battlefields. Similar memorial programs were reported from district and block Congress offices across Dharmanagar, Udaipur, and Ambassa.
