AGARTALA | June 16, 2026: A high-level delegation of the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) visited the CRPF headquarters at Shalbagan today to lodge a formal protest and submit a memorandum to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG). The deputation was organized in response to the alleged unprovoked attack on Youth Congress workers and supporters by CRPF personnel during yesterday’s demonstrations.
The delegation was led by TPCC President Ashish Kumar Saha and included senior party leader and CWC member, MLA Sudip Roy Barman, along with Youth Congress State President Nilkamal Saha and other senior office-bearers.
Allegations of Excessive Force
The leaders met with the DIG to present their strong objection to the conduct of the paramilitary forces during the protest. The Congress leadership argued that the action taken against the youth activists was disproportionate and violated the democratic rights of peaceful protesters.
”Yesterday’s incident was a clear instance of state-sponsored intimidation. Our Youth Congress activists were peacefully exercising their democratic right to protest when they were subjected to physical assault. We have submitted a formal deputation to the DIG demanding an immediate, impartial inquiry into the conduct of the personnel involved. We will not tolerate such high-handedness against our workers,” TPCC President Ashish Kumar Saha stated following the meeting.
Demand for Accountability
The memorandum submitted to the CRPF authorities outlines specific details of the alleged assault and highlights the injuries sustained by the youth workers. The party leadership has demanded:
- Immediate Inquiry: A time-bound, independent probe into the events of June 15th to identify the officials responsible for the excessive use of force.
- Security Measures: Assurance that paramilitary forces will respect the sanctity of political protests and adhere to standard operating procedures that prevent physical violence against civilians.
- Preventive Action: Implementation of stricter oversight to prevent the recurrence of such clashes during future political movements in the state.
The delegation indicated that they would continue to pursue the matter through all available administrative and legal channels until the culprits are held accountable. The situation at the Shalbagan camp remained under tight security as the Congress leaders concluded their discussion with the senior officials.
