AGARTALA | June 16, 2026: Escalating its agitation against the urban development policies of the ruling administration, the East Agartala Local Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) organized a massive protest rally today. Hundreds of party workers and aggrieved local residents gathered outside the CPI(M) East Agartala Zone Office located on Dhaleswar Jail Road to voice their anger against the BJP-led state government.
The demonstration targeted what the opposition termed the “haphazard and short-sighted” execution of infrastructure projects, which they claim has caused unprecedented public harassment across the capital city under the guise of the Smart City mission.
Civic Disruption Reaches Breaking Point at Dhaleswar
Protesters carrying party flags and placards blocked a section of Jail Road during the demonstration, raising slogans against the urban development ministry and municipal authorities.
Addressing the gathering, senior left-wing leaders alleged that the ongoing construction work has completely destabilized daily life in major residential and commercial hubs like Dhaleswar. They pointed out that uncoordinated digging for underground sewage lines, broken pavements left open for months, and severe dust pollution have created hazardous living conditions for children and elderly residents alike.
”The BJP government’s style of functioning is completely detached from ground realities. In the name of transforming Agartala into a Smart City, they have turned our historical neighborhoods into a zone of absolute chaos. Commuters are risking their lives daily on broken roads, and local businesses face financial ruin due to constant, unplanned blockades. This arbitrary and reckless execution must stop immediately,” a frontline CPI(M) leader stated during the street assembly.
Call for Public Accountability and Immediate Repairs
The speakers at the Dhaleswar Jail Road rally warned that the patience of urban taxpayers has run out. The CPI(M) leadership demanded that the state government immediately publish a transparent timeline for the completion of the ongoing projects and hold the private technical contractors accountable for the civic mess.
Following the protest assembly, a massive rally wound through the major lanes of the Dhaleswar sector. The party concluded the program by warning that if the broken arterial roads are not restored to a motorable condition and scientific drainage repairs are not fast-tracked before the peak monsoon showers, the CPI(M) will mobilize citizens to lock down administrative offices across the urban development sectors.
