AGARTALA | July 2, 2026: In a landmark welfare initiative tailored for the state’s sports media fraternity, the Tripura Sports Journalist Club (TSJC) today celebrated International Sports Journalists Day by distributing specialized accidental insurance policies to active sports journalists and sports photojournalists. The formal distribution ceremony was hosted at the Agartala Press Club.
The event was graced by the Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Tinku Roy, as the Chief Guest, alongside India’s legendary trailblazer and Padmashree recipient, Olympian Dipa Karmakar.
Securing the Safety Net for Field-Level Sports Media
The strategic move to provide customized insurance cover arrives as a major social security relief for sports media professionals who frequently travel to remote fields and outdoor venues to cover tournaments under volatile weather conditions. The premium frameworks for these newly distributed policies are designed to protect ground reporters and camera crews against unforeseen on-field injuries, medical emergencies, and travel accidents.
Addressing the assembly, Sports Minister Tinku Roy praised the club’s consistent advocacy for media welfare and reiterated the state government’s continuous support for journalists.
”Sports journalists and photojournalists play an indispensable role in bringing the achievements of our athletes to the global stage, often working under grueling conditions on the field. Providing them with an accidental insurance safety net is a commendable and necessary step taken by the Tripura Sports Journalist Club. Our department remains committed to supporting the welfare of the media fraternity, who act as a vital bridge between the sports department and the public,” Minister Tinku Roy stated.
Inspiration from the Legend
Sharing her perspective at the function, Padmashree Dipa Karmakar highlighted the deep bond between sportspersons and the media. She noted that behind every successful athlete’s journey, there is a dedicated team of sports journalists who document their struggles and victories from the very grassroots level.
Senior executives of the Agartala Press Club and the TSJC core committee, including seasoned photojournalists, were present on the dais. The club finalized the distribution by handing over the policy documents directly to the empanelled media members.
