AGARTALA: Escalate-ing its political offensive against the administration, the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) organized a high-voltage demonstration today, marching to gherao the official residence of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha in Agartala. The party demanded an immediate judicial inquiry, headed by a sitting judge of the High Court of Tripura, into the mysterious death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar.
Describing the late top cop as an upright, fearless, and duty-bound officer, the Congress leadership asserted that the public has lost faith in internal administrative inquiries regarding the incident.
Key Leaders Present
The gherao program was led by prominent senior Congress leaders, including:
- Shri Asish Kumar Saha: President, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC)
- Shri Sudip Roy Barman: Senior MLA and CWC Member
- Senior Pradesh Congress office-bearers, Youth Congress, and NSUI leadership along with hundreds of party supporters.
Demand for High Court Sitting Judge Investigation
As Congress leaders and workers marched toward the Chief Minister’s official residence holding placards and banners, they were stopped by a heavy deployment of police personnel and multi-layered security barricades erected along the route. High-voltage slogans were raised against the state government, demanding transparent justice for the deceased DGP.
Addressing reporters at the protest site, TPCC President Asish Kumar Saha and MLA Sudip Roy Barman strongly criticized the government’s handling of the situation.
”DGP Anurag Dhankar was a fearless, honest, and strictly duty-bound police officer. His sudden, mysterious death inside the high-security perimeter of the police headquarters raises extremely serious questions about the security state and governance in Tripura. A routine departmental or state police inquiry will not be impartial. We demand an immediate, time-bound judicial probe headed by a sitting judge of the High Court of Tripura to unearth the truth behind this tragic demise,” stated senior leader Sudip Roy Barman.
TPCC President Asish Kumar Saha reiterated that the Congress party will continue to take to the streets across all districts until an independent judicial investigation is officially sanctioned.
