AGARTALA | June 21, 2026: The controversial arrest of Right to Information (RTI) activist Prasenjit Saha under a narcotics case has triggered a massive political storm in Tripura. Taking a definitive stand on the issue, senior Congress leader and MLA Sudip Roy Barman visited the activist’s residence at Thakurpara in Melaghar today to extend full solidarity to the embattled family.
Accompanied by a delegation of senior party leaders, Sudip Roy Barman spent considerable time interacting with the family members, assuring them of extensive legal and political backing during this crisis.
Target for Exposing Corruption, Alleges Congress
Prasenjit Saha was recently intercepted and arrested by law enforcement officials after contraband cannabis (ganja) was allegedly recovered from his vehicle. He is currently in judicial custody. However, from the very outset, the activist’s family has vehemently rejected the charges, labeling the recovery as a planted conspiracy designed to silence his anti-corruption crusade.
After reviewing the case details with the family, Sudip Roy Barman launched a scathing attack on the state machinery, alleging that official channels are being misused to suppress whistleblowers.
”We have strong reasons to believe that Prasenjit Saha has been deliberately framed in a politically motivated case. He has consistently used the Right to Information Act to unearth deep-rooted irregularities and institutional corruption in the region. His activism made powerful circles uncomfortable, leading to this orchestrated conspiracy. We demand an immediate, impartial inquiry into the entire operational raid and will firmly stand by the family in their legal battle for justice,” MLA Sudip Roy Barman stated to media personnel outside the residence.
Call for Judicial Transparency and Public Backing
The high-profile visit was attended by prominent regional Congress leaders, including Nilkamal Saha, Habil Miah, Deepak Chakraborty, and Lakman Das, along with scores of grassroots party workers. The political intervention has provided major emotional relief to the family, with a growing section of Melaghar’s civil society also stepping forward to demand an independent review of the police action.
The local community and legal observers are now shifting their focus toward the upcoming court proceedings. The defense counsel is expected to move a formal petition highlighting procedural anomalies in the seizure, as pressure mounts on the police administration to ensure total transparency in the high-stakes trial.
