AGARTALA: Stepping up their political agitation for women’s political rights, the Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress has officially launched a statewide protest and mobilization drive today. The women’s wing of the Congress party organized a mass Postcard Campaign and Signature Drive addressed directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding the immediate, unconditional implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam 2023 (Women’s Reservation Act).
The campaign commenced from the front courtyard of the state Congress headquarters at Congress Bhavan in Agartala, drawing hundreds of women activists, youth leaders, and civil society members.
Protest Against the Delimitation Delay
The core grievance of the Mahila Congress centers around the clause within the 2023 Act that delays its actual implementation until after a fresh census and delimitation exercise are completed. The opposition argues that this clause serves as a political stalling tactic.
Key Objectives of the Mahila Congress Movement:
- No More Delays: The principal demand is the immediate execution of the 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies, without waiting for the census results.
- Direct Appeal to the PM: Thousands of handwritten postcards from women across Tripura’s eight districts are being dispatched to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to register direct civic discontent.
- Mass Public Signatures: A target has been set to collect over 50,000 signatures from women across markets, colleges, and rural blocks to showcase universal demand.
“The Act is Being Used as an Election Lolipop”: Smt. Sarbani Ghosh Chakraborty
Addressing the gathering of media personnel and party workers, Smt. Sarbani Ghosh Chakraborty, President of the Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress, launched a scathing attack on the ruling dispensation’s intent.
”The central government passed the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam with immense hype back in 2023, but it has remained purely on paper. By binding its implementation to future delimitation processes, they have effectively pushed women’s reservation into legal limbo for years. This is nothing but a political stunt to secure women’s votes. If the government is truly serious about women’s empowerment, let them implement it immediately in the upcoming legislative changes. Our signature campaign will reach every household to expose this facade,” the Mahila Congress Chief stated.
Senior Leadership Backs the Drive
The inauguration of the campaign was also attended by senior leaders of the Parent Congress wing, who expressed absolute solidarity with the women’s wing. They emphasized that true democratic equity cannot be achieved if half of the population is systematically kept away from policymaking tables through administrative excuses.
The Mahila Congress announced that following the week-long urban signature collection phase in Agartala, separate specialized teams will travel to northern and southern subdivisions to distribute postcards and mobilize rural communities on the issue.
