AGARTALA: In a resounding display of organizational unity and strength, thousands of Left-leaning teachers and government employees hit the streets of the capital city today, organizing a massive rally (Mahamichil) to press for their long-standing demands and voice grievances against the current administration’s policies.
The rally, which saw spontaneous participation from various school teachers, college educators, and state government employees, converted the arterial roads of Agartala into a sea of red flags and echoing slogans.
The key demands raised during the massive street demonstration included the immediate restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), regularisation of all contractual, contingency, and fixed-pay employees, timely release of outstanding Dearness Allowance (DA) installments, and a transparent, policy-driven transfer mechanism for educators. The leadership also vehemently protested against the rising contractualization of public sector jobs and the overall reduction of employment opportunities in government departments.
Addressing the gathering at the culmination of the rally, prominent leaders of the Left teacher-employee coordination committees stated that the overwhelming turnout is a clear indicator of the growing resentment among the state’s working class. They warned the government that if their legitimate professional demands are continuously ignored, the employee fronts will be forced to intensify their democratic movements and launch full-scale administrative non-cooperation blockades across the state in the coming days.
