AGARTALA, JULY 19: In a major bid to fortify its grassroots presence and challenge the ruling dispensation, the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) held a high-level extended organizational meeting at the Congress Bhavan in Agartala on Sunday.
The meeting was attended by TPCC President Asish Kumar Saha, senior MLA Sudip Roy Barman, PCC members, District Congress Presidents, heads of the ‘Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan’ (organization creation drive), Block Presidents, and frontal wing leaders.
Addressing the media post-meeting, TPCC President Asish Kumar Saha stated that the ‘Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan’ was rolled out across the state in May, followed by the appointment of campaign heads in June. “As part of this ongoing drive, a detailed roadmap has been finalized today to complete the formation of all Block, Mandal, Booth, and District committees by July 31. Building a rock-solid organizational foundation is our key priority to launch sustained public movements,” Saha added.
Series of Protest Programs Announced
The extended meet discussed several burning issues affecting the common masses, including the dilapidated condition of national highways, arbitrary hikes in electricity tariffs, and the student outreach program ‘Chhatra Ki Awaaz’.
The TPCC chief announced a series of crucial agitations and events:
- July 23: Simultaneous protest demonstrations will be staged in Dharmanagar, Ambassa, and Khowai districts against the hazardous condition of national highways.
- August 9 & 23: On the occasions of World Tribal Day (Aug 9) and ADC Day (Aug 23), the party will host special programs across all Village Councils, paying tribute to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Congress Questions Appointment of State Election Commissioner
Taking a sharp dig at the state government regarding the upcoming local body elections, Asish Kumar Saha alleged that the government’s underlying motives have become blatantly clear with the recent appointment of the State Election Commissioner (SEC).
Questioning the integrity of the process, the Congress chief demanded a formal review of the appointment of P.K. Chakraborty to the top poll post, citing outstanding allegations of corruption against the official. He asserted that Congress will relentlessly intensify its democratic movements across Tripura to protect public interests and uphold voting rights.
