AGARTALA: In a landmark administrative overhaul aimed at restructuring work-life balance and optimizing operational productivity, the state government has officially declared all Saturdays of the month as public holidays for government employees. This comprehensive shift transitions the administrative machinery from the legacy system where holidays were restricted exclusively to the second and fourth Saturdays.
To balance out the reduction in weekly operational days, the administration has simultaneously extended daily office hours. Moving forward, all government offices will strictly operate from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM on working days.
The major policy declaration was made by Cabinet Minister Sushanta Chowdhury during a high-profile press conference hosted at the Civil Secretariat (Mahakaran) on Monday afternoon.
The Restructured Administrative Matrix
The Cabinet decision brings a systematic structural shift designed to align regional government systems with contemporary corporate and central civil frameworks.
The Key Changes at a Glance:
- A Complete 5-Day Work Week: Government offices will remain completely closed on every Saturday and Sunday of the calendar month, giving employees a consistent two-day weekend.
- Extended Daily Windows: To prevent any shortfall in public service delivery or file clearances, the daily check-in time has been moved earlier and the check-out time pushed later.
- The Transition:
- Operational Metric : 10:00 AM – 5:30 PM
Legacy Framework : Open on 1st, 3rd, 5th Saturdays
New Approved Framework
Saturday Schedule : Closed on ALL Saturdays
Daily Office Hours: 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM - “More Family Time and Higher Productivity on Weekdays”: Minister Sushanta Chowdhury
Briefing media representatives regarding the rationale behind this systemic transformation, Cabinet Minister Sushanta Chowdhury explained that the policy is a win-win for both public servant welfare and administrative efficiency.
”The mindset that staying long hours across six days equals high productivity is outdated. Our government believes that a well-rested employee is a highly efficient employee. By granting holidays on all Saturdays, we are ensuring our workforce gets quality time to recharge, handle personal family responsibilities, and return to work with maximum focus.
However, we are equally committed to ensuring that the common public does not suffer due to closed doors on Saturdays. That is exactly why we have extended the daily operational window. By starting at 9:30 AM and closing at 6:00 PM, we are ensuring that the total number of productive weekly hours remains completely intact. We expect strict compliance with the new timings across all departments, and unexpected delays in file management will not be tolerated,” Cabinet Minister Sushanta Chowdhury stated to reporters.
The notifications regarding the modified holiday calendar and mandatory attendance tracking updates are being dispatched to all departmental heads, directorates, and district-level administrative offices for immediate implementation across the state.
