AGARTALA: In what is turning out to be one of the most punishing inflationary spells for the common man this year, state-run oil marketing companies have announced yet another massive upward revision in retail fuel prices. Effective from Monday midnight, the price of petrol has surged by a steep ₹2.64 per litre, while diesel has become costlier by ₹2.63 per litre.
With this latest back-to-back price revision, retail pump rates in the capital city have hit alarming new heights. Consumers in Agartala will now have to shell out ₹104.93 per litre for petrol and ₹93.83 per litre for diesel.
The Rapidly Escalating Fuel Graph
The current wave of domestic fuel hikes is directly linked to prolonged crude volatility in the international market, forcing public sector petroleum retailers to pass the financial burden onto retail consumers.
New Retail Tariff Structure in Agartala:
- Petrol (Revised Rate): ₹104.93 per Litre (Up by ₹2.64)
- Diesel (Revised Rate): ₹93.83 per Litre (Up by ₹2.63)
Traders and Commuters Face the Brunt
The sharp rise of nearly ₹3 in a single day has sent shockwaves through the local transport sector and daily retail markets. Because the state relies entirely on heavy commercial trucks entering via national highways for its supply of essential commodities, a diesel spike of this magnitude will instantly trigger a chain reaction across the supply chain.
“Our Daily Budget is Completely Shattered”: Citizens Cry Foul
Speaking to reporters at a busy fuel station in Agartala on Monday evening, stranded commuters, local entrepreneurs, and commercial drivers expressed intense frustration with the unchecked, compounding fuel hikes.
”This is becoming completely unlivable for a middle-class family. A hike of a few paise is understandable, but raising prices by more than two and a half rupees in one single go is an absolute assault on our monthly savings. Everything from green vegetables to basic household groceries is already expensive, and now our daily transport cost is going up significantly.
If diesel reaches nearly ₹94, freight operators will immediately increase their charges, and the ultimate victims will be ordinary consumers who are already struggling to manage a basic kitchen budget. The government must step in with immediate tax rationalization before this inflation triggers a full-blown economic crisis,” a local vehicle owner stated to reporters.
With public dissatisfaction mounting across the state, various business forums and consumer protection associations have urged the state government to provide immediate relief by temporarily lowering the state-level Value Added Tax (VAT) on petroleum products to cushion the common man from the severe economic blow.
