AGARTALA | July 5, 2026: In a commendable community effort to expand the capital city’s green cover, the Ramnagar Sporting Club organized a grand Vanamahotsava festival and a voluntary tree plantation drive today. The event, held within the club premises and surrounding residential lanes, aimed to raise ecological awareness and promote urban forestry to counter rising seasonal temperatures.
The environmental campaign was officially inaugurated by the Mayor of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the local Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Ramnagar Constituency, Shri Dipak Majumder.
Community Engagement for Urban Green Spaces
The green initiative drew heavy participation from local residents, youth volunteers, and prominent environmental activists from the Ramnagar block. Sharing the coordination desk to execute the ecological drive smoothly were:
- Shri Chandan Chanda, Secretary of the Ramnagar Sporting Club.
- Shri Babul Roy, President of the Ramnagar Sporting Club.
- Senior civic officers and local ward councilors of the AMC.
During the drive, dozens of saplings—including valuable medicinal plants, fruit-bearing species, and shade-providing trees—were planted across public parks, institutional boundaries, and roadside avenues.
”Preserving our environment is not just the responsibility of the forest department; it is a collective civil duty. As our cities expand, balancing development with robust green spaces is vital. Local institutions like the Ramnagar Sporting Club are doing fantastic work by organizing this Vanamahotsava drive. Planting a sapling is only the first step—our youth and community clubs must take active responsibility to nurture these plants until they grow into mature trees. Our corporation is completely dedicated to supporting any neighborhood that takes up such sustainable, green initiatives,” Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder stated during his inaugural speech.
Distribution of Saplings to Local Households
To ensure the campaign leaves a long-term impact, the club executive body under Secretary Chandan Chanda and President Babul Roy distributed hundreds of free saplings to local households. Residents were encouraged to plant them within their private residential compounds, turning the drive into a decentralized community movement.
The Ramnagar Sporting Club concluded the green festival by deploying a dedicated youth roster to monitor, water, and protect the newly planted saplings over the heavy monsoon season.
