The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has launched an inquiry into allegations of police inaction in connection with a motor accident case that resulted in the death of a youth in Udaipur, Gomati district of Tripura. The complaint was lodged by Pintu Paul of East Dhajanagar, Gomati District, who claimed that his elder brother, Suman Paul, passed away on January 7, 2025, due to complications from a road accident that occurred on October 17, 2024.
According to the complaint, the accident occurred near Gokulpur Shastriji Sangha when a motorcycle and an auto collided, leaving the motorcyclist injured. Despite initial treatment at Udaipur District Hospital and subsequent care from private doctors, Suman’s condition worsened in December 2024 due to a blood clot in his head. Despite undergoing surgery at ILS Hospital in Agartala and further treatment at GBP & AGMC Hospital, he eventually succumbed to his injuries on January 7, 2025.
The complainant alleged that when they tried to file a case against the auto driver for rash and negligent driving, the officer-in-charge at R.K. Pur Police Station refused to register an FIR. A representation was also made to the Superintendent of Police, Gomati District, on September 2, 2025, but no action was taken.
Reacting to the complaint, THRC Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh noted that there appeared to be police inaction in the case. The Commission has directed the Director General of Police, Tripura, to provide a detailed report on the allegations within three weeks. The case has been scheduled for further hearing on October 13, 2025. The Commission aims to ensure that justice is served and that proper action is taken regarding the incident.
