Tripura Congress MLA, Sudip Roy Barman, has taken a stand against the age limit for assistant professor recruitment in the state. In a letter addressed to Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha and the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC), Roy Barman urged the authorities to abolish the upper age limit of 40 years for the recruitment of Assistant Professors in general and professional degree colleges.
Citing a violation of University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, Roy Barman pointed out that the current recruitment advertisements issued on January 30 and May 7 restrict eligible candidates above the age of 40 from applying, despite UGC norms not specifying any upper age limit for such positions.
The senior Congress leader emphasized that many NET/SET/PhD-qualified candidates and experienced guest lecturers from Tripura are being unfairly excluded due to this age cap. He highlighted that several other states and Tripura University do not impose such restrictive criteria on assistant professor recruitment.
Roy Barman urged the state government to align its recruitment policy with national academic standards and ensure equal opportunity for all qualified aspirants, regardless of age. His appeal has sparked a larger debate on academic recruitment policies, with increasing pressure on the state government to revise the rules in the interest of merit and fairness.
The demand to remove the age limit for assistant professor recruitment in Tripura reflects a growing need for transparency and inclusivity in the education sector. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how the state government and TPSC will respond to the calls for change in recruitment policies to promote equality and meritocracy in academia.
