Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) has announced plans to install 6 lakh smart meters across the state by March 2027 in a bid to modernize its power sector and reduce theft. As of now, 88,748 smart meters have already been installed, with the remaining to be completed in the coming years.
The installation of smart meters is part of the state’s efforts to improve billing accuracy, ensure reliable electricity supply, and enhance overall efficiency in the power sector. By leveraging communication technology, smart meters enable automated and remote reading of energy consumption, providing real-time usage data to both consumers and the TSECL.
According to Biswajit Basu, the managing director of TSECL, smart meters support both postpaid and prepaid billing, usage tracking through mobile apps, and quick fault detection for early resolution. The project is being carried out in alignment with the Centre’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) and is funded by the Asian Development Bank.
In addition to residential areas, smart meters have also been installed at the government quarters of ministers, MLAs, and senior bureaucrats. Basu emphasized that the initiative aims to drive smart grid transformation and build public trust in the smart meter program.
The total cost of the project is estimated to be ₹603 crore, with completion expected by March 2027. Basu highlighted the benefits of real-time energy monitoring, automated data transmission, and improved billing accuracy as key advantages of smart meters.
Overall, the installation of smart meters in Tripura is expected to bring about significant improvements in the power sector, paving the way for a more efficient and reliable electricity supply across the state.
