The Tripura High Court’s decision to dispose of the PIL on illegal immigration has sparked renewed interest in the issue within the state. Dr. Bijoy Debbarma and John Debbarma took the initiative to file the PIL after their attempts to engage with the state government on the matter went unanswered.
Their petition highlighted the importance of addressing illegal immigration, especially in light of the Ministry of Home Affairs’ recent directive to crack down on infiltrators. The notification from the MHA outlined a clear process for identifying and deporting illegal immigrants, emphasizing the need for strict action to be taken.
During the initial hearing, Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and the division bench urged the petitioners to wait for a response from the state government before escalating the matter further. Deputy Solicitor General Bidyot Majumder explained that the court’s decision allows the petitioners to re-file if they do not receive a satisfactory response within a reasonable timeframe.
In a separate development, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for assistance in addressing illegal immigration from neighboring countries like Bangladesh and Myanmar. Debbarma’s appeal underscores the broader concern within Tripura about the impact of illegal immigration on the state’s social and economic landscape.
As the issue continues to gain traction in Tripura, stakeholders are hopeful that a collaborative approach between the state government, civil society organizations, and central authorities will lead to meaningful action to address illegal immigration effectively.
