SABROOM: In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming legislative sessions, the opposition CPIM faced a major setback in South Tripura today. Yogendra Tripura, a high-profile tribal leader and a close associate of CPIM State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, officially jumped ship to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Yogendra Tripura, a resident of Kalachhara in Sabroom, was formally inducted into the saffron fold during a joining ceremony where he was welcomed by BJP State General Secretary Bipin Debbarma.
A Heavyweight Exit: Who is Yogendra Tripura?
The defection is being viewed as a massive blow to the Left Front’s organizational strength in the Sabroom sub-division, given Yogendra’s extensive resume within the party:
- Current Standing: He was a member of the CPIM Sabroom Sub-Divisional Committee and the Secretariat of the Ganamukti Parishad (GMP) Sabroom Division.
- Past Leadership: He has served as a Central Committee member for the TSU (Students’ wing), TYF (Youth wing), and the GMP (Tribal wing).
- Electoral Experience: He was the Left Front’s candidate in the high-stakes ADC Elections of 2021.
The Joining Ceremony
The joining event was attended by several top-tier BJP leaders from the district and state, signaling the importance the party attaches to this acquisition:
- Bipin Debbarma, State General Secretary, BJP.
- Deepak Datta, Sabhadhipati, South Tripura Zilla Parishad.
- Deepayan Choudhury, President, South Pilak District.
- Mailafru Mog, MLA.
- Raghuraj Baral, State Media Co-Incharge.
Shifting Political Tides in South Tripura
Speaking to the media after his induction, Yogendra Tripura hinted at a lack of vision within his former party and expressed his desire to join the “mainstream of development” led by the Prime Minister.
”I have spent years in the organization, but the current direction of the state requires a different approach. I am joining the BJP to ensure that the people of Sabroom and the tribal community are directly connected to the development initiatives of the government,” he stated.
State General Secretary Bipin Debbarma remarked that the entry of a seasoned leader like Yogendra Tripura proves that the tribal population has complete faith in the BJP’s “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” mantra.
