AGARTALA: A major accident was narrowly averted today near the busy Children’s Park in Agartala when an entrance gate collapsed following a brief spell of light rain. The incident occurred during the busy afternoon hours, sparking panic among parents, children, and regular commuters who were in the vicinity.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although witnesses described it as a “miraculous escape” for several pedestrians and children who were just feet away from the falling structure.
Sudden Collapse Sparks Panic
Despite the rainfall being relatively light and brief, the structural integrity of the gate—located adjacent to the park—gave way unexpectedly. Large metal and wooden components of the gate came crashing down onto the pavement, blocking a portion of the walkway.
Eyewitness Account:
”I was walking toward the park entrance with my daughter when we heard a loud creaking sound. Within seconds, the upper frame of the gate collapsed. If we had been two steps faster, we would have been right under it. It’s terrifying how a little rain could bring down such a heavy structure,” said a local resident.
Concerns Over Maintenance and Safety
The incident has raised serious questions regarding the maintenance of public infrastructure in the capital, especially at venues frequented by children. Local citizens have expressed outrage, pointing out that the collapse of a gate during such minor weather conditions indicates significant structural decay or poor initial construction.
Key Concerns Raised by the Public:
- Structural Integrity: Residents are demanding a safety audit of all gates and temporary structures around the Children’s Park and the nearby Agartala City Centre.
- Proximity to Events: With the 4th State-Level Fish Festival (Matsya Mela) set to begin in the park area soon, the safety of the venue is now under intense scrutiny.
- Administrative Oversight: Many are asking why the aging structure was not reinforced or replaced before the onset of the pre-monsoon showers.
Administrative Response
Following the incident, police and municipal workers arrived at the spot to cordoned off the area and clear the debris. Officials from the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) have reportedly taken note of the collapse. While no official statement has been issued yet, workers on-site suggested that the base of the gate might have been weakened by internal corrosion over time.
The administration is expected to inspect the remaining entrance points of the park to ensure they are secure before the expected crowds arrive for the weekend festivities.
