AGARTALA: In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing employment crisis in the state, hundreds of job aspirants for the Tripura Fire & Emergency Services staged a massive protest in front of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s official residence today. The protesters, many of whom have been waiting for over four years for the recruitment process to conclude, accused the state government of “playing with the futures” of the unemployed youth.
The demonstration brought traffic near the CM’s residence to a standstill for several hours before police intervened with force, detaining dozens of protesters.
Four Years of Uncertainty
The core grievance of the aspirants stems from a recruitment notification issued in 2022 for the posts of Fireman and Diver. Despite clearing the physical and written examinations years ago, the final viva-voce (interview) has remained stalled, leaving thousands of candidates in a state of professional limbo.
Timeline of the Stalemate:
- 2022: Initial recruitment drive launched; written and physical tests conducted.
- 2023–2025: Repeated assurances from the department with no concrete dates for interviews.
- May 2026: Protesters claim the government is ignoring their plight while many candidates are now crossing the maximum age limit for government service.
“Stop Playing with Our Lives”: Aspirants
Holding placards and chanting slogans against the delay, the protesters expressed their deep-seated frustration. Many traveled from distant districts like North Tripura and South Tripura to voice their anger in the capital.
”We have waited for over 1,400 days. We spent our parents’ hard-earned money on coaching and travel, and now we are told to wait indefinitely. If the government can conduct other elections and exams, why can’t they finish our viva tests? They are destroying a whole generation of youth,” a tearful protester shouted during the demonstration.
Police Action and Detentions
As the protesters attempted to breach the security cordon to enter the Chief Minister’s premises, a large contingent of Tripura Police and TSR personnel moved in. When the aspirants refused to clear the road, the police began a crackdown, physically lifting protesters into waiting buses.
Current Situation:
- Arrests: Approximately 50-60 protesters were detained.
- Location: The detained youth were transported to the AD Nagar Police Line ground, where they were kept under preventive custody.
- Injuries: Minor scuffles were reported, with a few protesters sustaining bruises during the clearing of the sit-in.
Government and Opposition Response
While the Chief Minister’s Office has yet to issue an official statement regarding today’s protest, senior officials from the Fire Service Department have previously cited “administrative hurdles” and “verification backlogs” as reasons for the delay.
Opposition leaders from the CPIM and Congress have condemned the police action, calling it an “undemocratic suppression” of legitimate demands. They have urged the state government to immediately announce the interview schedule to prevent further unrest among the youth.
