AGARTALA: In a major environmental and urban development initiative, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched a mega project to revive and clean up historical and abandoned water bodies across the capital city. Aimed at restoring ecological balance and providing usable water sources for local communities, the civic body has already successfully renovated and handed over 23 water bodies to the public.
To inspect the ongoing progress of this comprehensive restoration drive, AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder conducted a thorough ground inspection at the central Prabhu Bari and Madhyapara pond sites on Tuesday.
Accompanied by Ward Corporator Ratna Dutta and senior technical engineers from the corporation’s engineering wing, the Mayor reviewed the structural reinforcement of pond embankments, de-siltation progress, and planned beautification setups. He directed the site supervisors to maintain top-tier quality controls and adhere strictly to the project deadlines to avoid local waterlogging issues during the upcoming monsoon spells.
”Transforming Agartala into an eco-friendly and clean ‘Smart City’ relies heavily on protecting our natural wetlands and water bodies. By scientifically reviving these long-neglected, garbage-dumped ponds, we are transforming them into clean, community-centric assets. While 23 projects have been formally delivered to the public, work on the remaining reservoirs is moving at a rapid pace,” stated AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder.
The initiative has drawn widespread praise from local residents, who noted that cleaning these stagnant pools will drastically improve the micro-environment, eliminate mosquito breeding grounds, and naturally recharge the depleting groundwater table in congested residential sectors.
