AGARTALA: High drama unfolded near the official residence of Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha when a large group of job aspirants who cleared the Selection Test for Graduate Teachers (STGT) staged a sudden sit-in demonstration demanding immediate recruitment.
The agitated candidates gathered outside the VIP enclosure carrying placards and slogans, eventually sitting down on the road to block traffic after being denied a direct audience with the Chief Minister. Security forces and Agartala Police swiftly deployed reinforcements to the spot, physically removing the protesters and detaining them to restore order in the high-security zone.
Key Demands & Aspirants’ Grievances
- Long Delay in Appointment: The candidates highlighted that despite clearing the STGT examination, they have been waiting for years for official appointment letters and deployment to government schools.
- Severe Teacher Shortage in Schools: Protesters emphasized that primary and secondary schools across Tripura are currently grappling with an acute shortage of teaching faculty, adversely affecting students’ academic quality.
- Age-Limit Concerns: Many aspirants expressed frustration that the prolonged delay in completing the recruitment process is causing several qualified candidates to cross the maximum age limit for government employment.
- Police Action: Following a brief altercation when demonstrators attempted to breach police barricades near the CM’s residence, police personnel detained the key protesters and transported them to police line grounds before dispersing the remaining crowd.
