AGARTALA: Denouncing the alarming rise in crimes against women and rampant systemic inaction, the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) organized a high-intensity demonstration in front of the Agartala City Centre today. The protest was triggered by a recent heartbreaking incident in Rajasthan where two sisters were driven to suicide following continuous harassment and institutional apathy, as well as recent cases of sexual assault reported within Tripura.
Responding to a nationwide call for resistance by the SUCI(C) General Secretary, hundreds of party activists and civil society members gathered to demand swift capital punishment for perpetrators and immediate administrative accountability.
The Rajasthan Tragedy: A Catalyst for Outrage
The immediate trigger for the mass agitation was a horrifying case reported from Rajasthan. According to reports, an elder sister was trapped in a fraudulent romantic relationship, blackmailed with intimate videos, and gang-raped continuously for four years. Finding no way out, she died by suicide.
When her younger sister identified the criminals and approached law enforcement for justice, police inaction allegedly emboldened the culprits to target and torture the younger sister as well, forcing her to end her life as well. The protesters highlighted this as a classic example of absolute administrative collapse and state-sponsored vulnerability.
A Comprehensive 7-Point Charter of Demands
During the demonstration at the City Centre, the SUCI(C) leadership placed an uncompromising seven-point demand framework before both the central and state governments:
- Justice for Rajasthan Sisters: Immediate arrest and exemplary punishment for the rapists and the complicit administrative and police officials whose inaction caused the double suicide.
- Accountability on Safety Slogans: The central government must explain why the Prime Minister’s flagship ‘Beti Bachao’ campaign has failed to yield actual safety on the ground.
- Institutional Safeguards: Execution of absolute deterrence and strict ground-level policing across all states to protect the dignity of women.
- Action on Tripura Cases: Fast-tracked trials and severe punishment for culprits involved in recent rape cases reported in the Dhalai district and other parts of Tripura.
- Curbing Digital Obscenity: A total ban on the circulation of obscene, degrading, and explicit content across internet platforms and social media networks.
- Eradication of Substance Abuse: Implementing aggressive crackdowns on the free-flowing drug trade, which feeds criminal tendencies.
- Combating Human Trafficking: Establishing stringent border and interstate checking mechanisms to eliminate women and child trafficking networks.
“Capitalist Degradation Feeding the Rape Culture”: Arun Bhowmik
Addressing the gathering, SUCI(C) Tripura State Secretary Comrade Arun Bhowmik launched a scathing ideological attack on the ruling classes, linking the spike in sexual violence to systemic societal decay.
”Rapes and gang-rapes are rising continuously across India, and it is a matter of shame that the culprits walk free in most cases. In this capitalist societal structure, we are witnessing a terrifying erosion of basic human values. The toxic combination of political patronage, vote-bank politics, state-sponsored drug syndicates, and cultural vulgarity has turned our neighborhoods unsafe for women.
Criminals have no fear of the law because they enjoy political shelter. We cannot rely on mere administrative promises anymore. I call upon citizens from all walks of life to build an uncompromising, powerful social resistance movement to force the rulers to crush crimes against women with an iron hand,” State Secretary Arun Bhowmik stated.
The demonstration concluded with the burning of effigies symbolizing administrative failure, with the party warning that they would take the agitation to every sub-divisional headquarters if police authorities fail to clean up local crime spots.
