AGARTALA | July 4, 2026: Marking a historic milestone in the development of regional rail infrastructure, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha officially inaugurated the new Agartala-Karimganj-Agartala Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train service today. The high-profile flagging-off ceremony was hosted amid great enthusiasm at the Agartala Railway Station on Saturday morning.
The introduction of this modern MEMU rake is expected to make daily commuting between the capital of Tripura and the major commercial hub of Karimganj in Assam significantly faster, more economical, and highly convenient for thousands of regular passengers.
A Joint Push for Enhanced Northeast Rail Infrastructure
The inaugural event was attended by top state cabinet ministers and public representatives. Joining the Chief Minister on the platform to wave the green flag were:
- Shri Sushanta Chowdhury, Minister for Transport, Tourism, and Information & Cultural Affairs
- Shri Rajib Bhattacharjee, Member of Parliament (MP), Rajya Sabha
- Smt. Meena Rani Sarkar, MLA of Badharghat Assembly Constituency
- Senior operational heads and engineers from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone.
Addressing the gathered crowd and railway officials, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha commended the relentless vision of the central government and the Ministry of Railways in transforming Northeast India into a highly connected economic corridor.
”The launch of the Agartala-Karimganj MEMU train service fulfills a long-standing demand of the people of both Tripura and the Barak Valley of Assam. Under the Act East policy and the HIRA (Highways, Airways, Railways, Roadways) model of development, our rail network has undergone a massive transformation. This MEMU train will not only cut down travel time significantly but will also give a major boost to small-scale trade, medical tourism, and student movement between our sister states. Our government is committed to expanding these tracks further to create a completely seamless connectivity loop,” Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha stated during his address.
Key Operational Features of the New MEMU Service
According to technical briefs shared by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) authorities during the launch event, the new train service boasts several advanced features:
- Eco-Friendly and Fast Electric Traction: Powered by electricity, the MEMU train offers superior acceleration and deceleration compared to conventional diesel passenger trains, effectively reducing overall transit time.
- High Carrying Capacity: The train is equipped with modern, aerated coaches featuring high-density seating and ample standing space, making it perfect for daily commuters and office goers.
- Affordable Travel Matrix: Ticket pricing has been kept highly economical to ensure that lower-income traders, daily wagers, and students can travel seamlessly across state borders without financial stress.
Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury also spoke at the event, noting that the state transport department is actively working with the railway ministry to increase the frequency of local passenger rakes and upgrade safety amenities across all rural transit stations in Tripura.
