AGARTALA: Severe political tension flared up in Mohanpur sub-division today after the opposition CPI(M) was forced to suspend its scheduled mass deputation to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) following a sudden blockade and intimidation allegedly orchestrated by ruling party miscreants. Addressing a press conference at the Bhanu Ghosh Smriti Bhavan post-incident, senior CPI(M) leaders launched a scathing attack on the state police administration, accusing it of surrendering to political hoodlums.
Police Approval Given, Yet Miscreants Took Control
According to details shared by the leadership, the CPI(M) Mohanpur Sub-Divisional Committee had planned a mass deputation program to the SDM to press for key local public grievances. The party had secured official clearance from the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Mohanpur. Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury was scheduled to lead the protest rally, which was supposed to assemble at Fatikcherra market before marching toward the SDM office.
However, CPI(M) leaders alleged that hours before the program could begin, ruling party operatives and “bike forces” mobilized in large numbers, physically occupying critical transit points and intersections across Mohanpur to prevent opposition activists from gathering.
CPI(M) Worker Attacked; Leaders Slam “Police Inaction”
PCC and CPI(M) West Tripura leader Ratan Das, accompanied by senior leaders Sudip Debnath, Pranab Debbarma, Nayan Sarkar, and Sudip Sarkar, stated that when party workers attempted to move toward Fatikcherra, they faced violent resistance. A local CPI(M) worker, Subhash Debnath, was violently assaulted by miscreants.
”When we questioned the police, the SDPO claimed that nearly 3,000 ruling party supporters had assembled, rendering the situation beyond their control. The SDPO explicitly shirked responsibility for maintaining order, admitting they could not handle the situation. What is the point of police permission if police personnel cannot contain criminal elements and safeguard constitutional democratic rights?” Ratan Das questioned during the press conference.
Faced with escalating safety concerns for its workers and the complete absence of a police security umbrella, the CPI(M) leadership was forced to suspend today’s program. The leaders condemned the breakdown of law and order in Mohanpur and warned that such undemocratic suppression would be met with stronger grassroots resistance across the state in the coming days.
