AGARTALA: Heightening the political temperature in the state over the mysterious demise of Tripura’s Director General of Police (DGP), Anurag Dhankar, the opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] staged a massive rally and public meeting in Agartala today. The party raised a firm demand for a high-level, independent investigation monitored directly by the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court to uncover the unvarnished truth behind the top cop’s death.
The rally, which saw participation from hundreds of party leaders, cadre, and supporters carrying placards and banners, marched through the main thoroughfares of the capital city before culminating in a brief rally gathering.
Addressing the assembly, senior CPI(M) leaders asserted that the death of the state’s highest-ranking police official inside his official office chamber at the State Police Headquarters has raised serious and disturbing questions regarding security, administrative governance, and political pressures.
Core Demands Raised by CPI(M):
- High Court-Monitored Investigation: The CPI(M) leadership demanded that a high-level judicial inquiry committee be constituted immediately under the direct supervision of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura, stating that a routine police investigation will not suffice to instil public confidence.
- Transparency in Post-Mortem & Forensic Findings: The leaders urged the state government to make all medical, forensic, and post-mortem reports public without any delay or administrative filter.
- Scrutiny of Administrative Pressures: The party demanded a deep look into the internal administrative and political circumstances leading up to the incident, questioning the environment under which high-ranking security officers operate in the state.
Speaking at the meeting, party leaders emphasized that when the head of the state’s entire police force meets such an unnatural end within his own workplace, it points to a deep-seated administrative crisis. They warned that if the state government hesitates or delays in initiating an impartial judicial probe, the opposition will intensify its democratic movements and protest rallies across all sub-divisions of Tripura in the coming days.
