AGARTALA: Expressing deep concern over the rising incidents of violence against vulnerable groups in the state, the Tripura Unit of the All India Lawyers’ Association for Justice (AILAJ) submitted a mass deputation to the Director General of Police (DGP) today. A high-level delegation of legal professionals, human rights advocates, and victimized families gathered at the Police Headquarters in Agartala to demand strict policing and fast-tracked judicial investigations.
The deputation specifically highlighted several long-pending, sensitive cases involving crimes against women and children, pointing out procedural delays and urging the state’s top cop to ensure rigorous law enforcement.
The delegation was led by Advocate Mrinmoy Das, State Convenor of AILAJ, and prominent social activist Swapan Banik. They were accompanied by immediate family members of victims from multiple pending cases, who sought direct accountability and updates on their respective police investigations.
Core Concerns Raised in the Deputation:
- Stringent Action on Pending Cases: The lawyers’ body presented a detailed dossier of specific, unresolved cases of physical abuse, harassment, and violence targeting minors and women, demanding immediate arrests of the remaining accused.
- Timely Chargesheet Filing: AILAJ urged the DGP to issue strict guidelines to all local police stations across Tripura’s districts to file comprehensive chargesheets within the statutory period to prevent accused individuals from securing easy bail.
- Support and Protection for Victim Families: The association raised concerns over the alleged intimidation faced by victimized families and demanded adequate security for witnesses during ongoing trials.
Speaking to media personnel outside the Police Headquarters, Advocate Mrinmoy Das emphasized that legal delays only embolden perpetrators of domestic and societal violence.
”There is an alarming rise in crimes against women and children in our state, and the slow pace of investigations in several critical cases is highly concerning. We have presented specific case files to the DGP today. As legal professionals, we demand that the police apparatus act with utmost urgency, maintain absolute transparency, and ensure that the victims’ families are not left waiting indefinitely for basic justice,” stated AILAJ State Convenor Advocate Mrinmoy Das.
The delegation reported that the DGP received the deputation positively, assuring them of a thorough review of the cited cases and reiterating the department’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and security of women and children across Tripura.
