AGARTALA | July 8, 2026: In a shocking exposure of how political clout and administrative loopholes are leveraged by predatory land mafias to dispossess vulnerable citizens, a critical kidney patient, Rajesh Saha, and his aging mother, Minati Rani Saha, have been driven to the brink of despair in the Aralia area under the Pratapgarh Mandal. The family discovered that their primary ancestral asset—a plot of land held in undisputed physical possession for over 33 years—was fraudulently mutated in 2015 in favor of a notorious Left-era land mafia kingpin, Bhajan Das.
The crisis took a violent turn on Tuesday when Rajesh Saha was physically assaulted by the land mafia’s associates when he attempted to inspect his mother’s lawful property alongside neighborhood elders.
Exploiting Financial Distress: How a 1992 Legal Deed Was Erased in 2015
The administrative fraud traces back to 1992, when Smt. Minati Rani Saha legally purchased a parcel of land in Aralia through a registered sale deed. Shortly after the purchase, Minati Rani’s husband passed away unexpectedly, plunging the young family into extreme financial distress. To survive, the mother and her young son were forced to temporarily relocate to a rented accommodation elsewhere, leaving the plot vacant. Due to prolonged financial constraints and lack of legal awareness, the family was unable to immediately process the official revenue mutation (parcha).
Taking advantage of their long physical absence, a prominent land mafia operative from the previous Left Front regime, identified as Bhajan Das, allegedly forged documents in 2015. Through suspected administrative collusion within the local revenue circle, Das managed to illegally mutate the land record under his own name and took unauthorized physical control of the boundary.
Severe Medical Crisis Uncovers the Revenue Registry Fraud
The systemic fraud came to light only recently due to a severe medical emergency. In 2021, Rajesh Saha was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, requiring expensive specialized treatment and an eventual organ transplant outside the state. To fund her son’s life-saving operations, Minati Rani Saha decided to liquidate her only asset—the Aralia land parcel.
However, when Rajesh approached the revenue department to extract the necessary up-to-date registry documents for potential buyers, he was stunned to find his mother’s property officially registered under the name of Bhajan Das.
Seeking answers, Rajesh filed a Right to Information (RTI) application with the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sadar office. The subsequent official RTI findings clearly exposed the manipulation: the legal reports confirmed that the actual foundational deed owner remains Rajesh’s mother, Minati Rani Saha, whereas the possession and mutation records were deceptively diverted to Bhajan Das.
”I am a critical kidney patient fighting for my life, and my mother is completely bedridden. We don’t want any trouble; we just wanted to sell our own property to pay for my medical treatment so I can survive. But the land mafia Bhajan Das and his armed associates have manipulated our family parcha into his name. When we went to the site on Tuesday afternoon along with senior neighborhood guardians to review the boundary lines for an administrative settlement, Bhajan Das and his gang launched an unprovoked physical assault on us. I was pushed to the ground and severely assaulted despite telling them about my medical condition. We have filed an official police complaint, and we are directly appealing to Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to intervene, dismantle this mafia nexus, and restore our land so I can fund my treatment,” a visibly shaken Rajesh Saha stated from his residence.
Family Apprehends Threat to Life; Demands SDM Intervention
Following Tuesday’s violent altercation, a high sense of tension prevails in the Suresh Das Lane and Aralia pockets of Pratapgarh. Neighborhood residents have expressed solidarity with the ailing family, condemning the high-handedness of the land mafia.
The victim’s family has filed a formal written petition with the SDM Sadar and the local police station, demanding the immediate cancellation of the fraudulent 2015 mutation, criminal arrest of Bhajan Das and his associates for assaulting a critical patient, and immediate police protection for the family.
