AGARTALA | June 27, 2026: As local body elections draw closer, public dissatisfaction with urban civic amenities is boiling over across the capital city. Moving beyond remote rural pockets, intense civic protests have now hit the heart of Agartala. In a striking escalation of public anger, a local “Mahila Bahini” (women’s brigade) alongside angry residents of Ward No. 27 intercepted Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Shri Dipak Majumder this morning to lodge sharp complaints against their local Councillor, Shri Subhash Bhowmik.
The early morning face-off took place at Booth No. 58 in the Ghoshpara area of Aralia, where residents staged a demonstration on a heavily damaged road stretch that they claim has transformed into an active “death trap.”
”Speaking to the Councillor is Useless”: Furious Residents Appeal Directly to CM
The protest highlights a growing pattern across various AMC wards, where Mayor Dipak Majumder’s daily ground inspection rounds are increasingly being met with intense public grievances. Following recent high-voltage protests in the Manika Para pocket, the spotlight has now shifted to Aralia.
Local housewives and elderly residents blocked the path of the inspection delegation, alleging that repeated appeals to Ward Councillor Subhash Bhowmik regarding the dilapidated state of the Ghoshpara passage have yielded zero results. Left with no alternative, the neighborhood has now placed an emergency appeal directly before Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to step in and resolve the civic crisis.
”We have repeatedly begged our Councillor to repair this basic stretch, but our voices are completely ignored. This road is no longer walkable; it has turned into a veritable death trap for our school-going children and elderly citizens. Speaking to the Councillor has become completely useless. Today, we stopped the Mayor to show him the ground reality. We are appealing directly to our Honorable Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha—please look into the negligence of Ward 27 and save our families by sanctioning this road immediately,” a front-line woman protestor from the Ghoshpara panel stated on camera.
Mayor Promises Intervention Amid Rising Election-Season Accountability
With civic polls on the horizon, the frequency of public confrontations during mayoral visits has surged, forcing the municipal corporation to fast-track its grievance redressal protocols:
- On-the-Spot Directives: Witnessing the intense public backlash, Mayor Dipak Majumder reportedly directed the accompanying AMC executive engineers to draw up an immediate brick-soling and patchwork repair estimate for Booth No. 58 to provide temporary relief.
- Accountability Mandate: The Mayor assured the agitated women’s panel that local corporate representatives would be held accountable for communication gaps, emphasizing that public safety infrastructure cannot be compromised.
- Monsoon Vulnerability Assessment: Orders were issued to clear adjacent silted drains along the Aralia stretch to check heavy water-logging, which has been further eroding the fragile bituminous top layer of the road.
