AGARTALA | June 23, 2026: Marking the auspicious conclusion of the annual Ambubachi rituals, a phenomenal surge of devotees was witnessed at the historic Shri Shri Laxmi Narayan Bari Temple in Agartala today. The age-old temple complex, situated near the scenic Ujjayanta Palace grounds, transformed into a vibrant hub of spiritual fervor as thousands gathered to offer prayers and participate in the sacred festivities.
Alongside the solemn performance of traditional Vedic rituals, the temple premises came alive with an ecstatic celebration of Sindoor Khela (the ritualistic smearing of vermilion) by hundreds of women devotees.
A Vibrant Spectrum of Devotion and Harmony
The closure and subsequent reopening of the temple sanctorum during the Ambubachi period holds immense spiritual significance across the region. Following the completion of the purification prayers by the head priests early in the day, the temple gates were opened to the public, leading to long queues of eager worshippers extending well beyond the main entrance.
The atmosphere shifted from quiet contemplation to pure celebration in the afternoon as women, dressed in traditional attire, gathered in the central courtyard. They smeared each other with vermilion, wishing for the peace, prosperity, and longevity of their families and the wider community.
”Ambubachi at Laxminarayan Bari represents a beautiful amalgamation of rigorous spiritual discipline and community celebration. Witnessing hundreds of mothers and sisters coming together for Sindoor Khela inside this royal-era temple compound reflects the deep-rooted cultural resilience of our state. The entire administration has coordinated closely with the temple management to ensure seamless crowd movement, drinking water facilities, and medical desks for the arriving public,” a representative of the temple management committee stated.
Strict Security and Civic Arrangements Deployed
To accommodate the massive footfall and prevent any untoward incidents or stampedes around the palace compound lanes, the civic body and local authorities instituted several safety parameters:
- Regulated Entry Queues: Setting up dedicated barricades and distinct entry-exit lines to maintain order near the main sanctum and the adjacent Shiva temple shrine.
- Voluntary Help Desks: Deploying civil defense personnel and local youth volunteers to assist elderly devotees and families navigating the heavily crowded temple courtyard.
- Cleanliness Monitoring: Implementing regular cleaning schedules to preserve the pristine environment of the historic temple ponds and outer walls during the massive public gathering.
By late evening, the celebratory waves gradually settled as the final Aarti prayers concluded, leaving behind an atmosphere charged with spiritual rejuvenation and profound social unity
