Police in Tripura’s Udaipur subdivision have launched investigations into two alleged incidents of cow slaughter that occurred during Eid-ul-Zuha, sparking tensions, protests, and concerns over potential communal unrest in the region.
The first incident took place near the Gomati riverbank in Chanban under the Gomati Para area, where a cow was allegedly slaughtered in public view. This act triggered anger among locals, especially members of a Hindu group affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), who witnessed the slaughter and raised an alarm.
Four individuals have been arrested in connection with this incident, and the cow’s carcass was buried under administrative supervision to prevent further provocation. Senior police officers and personnel from the Tripura Police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) were deployed to control the situation and prevent any violence.
According to SDPO Nirman Das, despite efforts to prevent such incidents, another case of cow slaughter was reported in the Rajnagar area near the historic Bhuvaneswari Temple. The slaughter reportedly took place within a private residence, leading to protests and a brief confrontation between members of two communities. Some property damage occurred, but no injuries were confirmed.
Authorities have increased patrolling in both areas and have urged residents to maintain peace and refrain from spreading or reacting to rumors. The situation is currently under control but remains sensitive, with appeals being made for communal harmony as investigations continue.
The incidents have raised concerns about communal tensions in the region, and police are working to ensure the safety and security of all residents. Additional measures may be taken to prevent further incidents and maintain peace in Udaipur.
