AGARTALA: In a major blow to the business community and the catering industry, the Central Government has announced a massive hike in the prices of commercial LPG cylinders effective from today, May 1. The price of a 19kg commercial cylinder, used extensively in hotels, restaurants, and small business establishments, has been increased by a staggering ₹994 in a single jump.
This sharp revision is expected to trigger a ripple effect on the prices of cooked food and outdoor catering services across the state.
New Price Structure at a Glance
The sudden spike has pushed the cost of commercial gas to a record high, leaving business owners in a state of shock as they start the new month.
- Previous Price: ₹2,587.50
- Revised Price (Effective May 1): ₹3,581.50
- Total Increase: ₹994.00
While the prices of domestic LPG cylinders (14.2kg) remain unchanged for now, the nearly ₹1,000 hike in the commercial segment is one of the highest single-day increases recorded in recent years.
Impact on Local Businesses in Tripura
The hike comes at a time when the hospitality sector in Agartala was just beginning to see a festive surge following the New Year. Small-scale entrepreneurs, especially those running “Pice Hotels” and street food stalls, expressed deep concern over the sustainability of their businesses.
Key Concerns:
- Menu Price Hikes: Restaurant owners have indicated that they may be forced to increase the prices of thalis and snacks to cover the increased fuel costs.
- Burden on Street Vendors: Small tea stalls and fast-food vendors who rely on commercial cylinders will be hit the hardest, as they often operate on thin profit margins.
- Inflationary Pressure: Traders fear that the hike will lead to a general increase in the cost of living, as the cost of “eating out” becomes significantly more expensive for the common man.
Political and Economic Reactions
Economic analysts suggest that the hike is a result of fluctuations in international oil prices and the periodic revision of fuel rates by oil marketing companies. However, local trade unions and merchant associations have termed the move “anti-business,” urging the government to provide some form of subsidy to prevent the collapse of small-scale eateries.
As the new rates come into effect immediately, residents of Agartala can expect a noticeable shift in food prices at local restaurants starting today.
