The city of Agartala in Tripura, India, is poised to undergo significant development and growth over the next 20 years with the unveiling of the ‘Greater Agartala’ master plan by the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC). This marks the first formal master plan for the city, aimed at guiding its expansion in an organized and sustainable manner.
Mayor Dipak Majumder highlighted the importance of the new plan in addressing the city’s previous unplanned development and setting a course for future growth. The ‘Greater Agartala’ plan includes the incorporation of the city’s 51 municipal wards and 49 adjoining Gram Panchayats, laying the groundwork for future urban expansion.
Key features of the master plan include provisions for Metro rail stations, new industrial estates, wider roads, flyovers, and modern housing infrastructure. Utilizing cutting-edge Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, the plan ensures precise urban mapping and data-driven decision-making. Additionally, a 3D city model is in development to provide a detailed visualization of future Agartala.
To accommodate the increasing number of apartment-based residences, new real estate laws are being considered to streamline construction and housing policies. The first phase of the plan has been completed and is currently under review in the AMC council meeting, with further discussions and approvals necessary before implementation.
Mayor Majumder emphasized that the ‘Greater Agartala’ plan sets the stage for urban transformation, aiming to strike a balance between growth and liveability. This initiative represents a forward-looking approach to development, positioning Agartala for significant progress and prosperity in the years to come.
