Tripura University is embroiled in controversy as Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman has demanded a probe into an alleged recruitment scam involving the university’s Vice Chancellor and Registrar. In a letter addressed to MHRD Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Roy Barman accused officiating Vice Chancellor Prof Ganga Prasad Prasain and Registrar Dr Deepak Sharma of engaging in massive irregularities in the recruitment process over the past year.
Roy Barman lamented the tarnishing of Tripura University’s reputation, stating that what was once a symbol of academic excellence and integrity is now plagued by corruption and nepotism. He accused Prasain and Sharma of abusing their authority and compromising the institution’s core values.
Specifically, Roy Barman highlighted the violation of rules and regulations in the recruitment of faculty members in departments such as Law, Sociology, and Sanskrit. He pointed out that Prasain, whose executive powers were supposed to have been withdrawn, continued to make appointments against UGC guidelines.
Moreover, Roy Barman alleged that the Vice Chancellor had hired his son as an engineer at the university, bypassing more qualified local candidates. He claimed that genuine candidates from Tripura were being overlooked in favor of outsiders, with some appointments allegedly influenced by political affiliations.
Calling for immediate action, Roy Barman urged the Minister to suspend Prasain and Sharma and establish a High Level Inquiry Committee to investigate the recruitment process, contracts, and purchases made at the university. He emphasized the need for an independent authority to uncover the extent of the irregularities and restore transparency and fairness to Tripura University.
The allegations have sparked outrage and raised concerns about the integrity of the recruitment process at the university. As the controversy unfolds, stakeholders await the outcome of the proposed investigation and hope for accountability and justice to be served.
