AGARTALA | July 6, 2026: In a major push for legal accountability and social justice, a high-level delegation from the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) [CPI(ML)] today submitted a formal deputation to the State Human Rights Commission. The political front demanded an immediate, time-bound judicial investigation and swift resolution of all pending complaints regarding the unprecedented communal violence that recently struck Kadamtala in North Tripura district and Gandatwisa (formerly Gandacherra) in Dhalai district.
The delegation strongly criticized the local administration, alleging that a lack of timely preventive action and institutional failures allowed localized tensions to spiral into widespread property destruction and targeted attacks on vulnerable families.
Pointing Out Institutional Failures and Systemic Stagnation
The formal move comes amid growing concerns from human rights bodies over the slow pace of rehabilitation and legal redressal for families displaced during the twin regional clashes. Large quantities of private properties, commercial shops, and residential structures were vandalized during the unrest, leaving numerous families in deep financial and psychological distress.
Addressing the press outside the Human Rights Commission office, senior CPI(ML) representatives asserted that delaying justice only deepens the sense of insecurity among minority and indigenous populations in the affected subdivisions.
”What we witnessed in Kadamtala and Gandatwisa was a complete breakdown of the law and machinery. Peaceful pockets were transformed into hotbeds of tension under the eyes of the local police. Months have passed, yet the affected families are still living in temporary setups without fair compensation or visible progress in the criminal investigations. We have approached the Human Rights Commission today because the local police machinery is moving at a snail’s pace to shield influential miscreants. We demand that the Commission intervene immediately to set up an independent tracking cell, ensure the swift disposal of all registered First Information Reports (FIRs), and guarantee complete legal and physical security for the victims,” a senior CPI(ML) state committee leader stated.
Core Structural Demands Forwarded to the Commission
The formal memorandum submitted by the CPI(ML) delegation to the Human Rights Commission outlines a comprehensive set of interventions:
- Fast-Tracking Investigations: Directing the state home department to expedite all pending investigations into the Kadamtala and Gandatwisa violence through dedicated fast-track desks.
- Prompt Resolution of Complaints: Ensuring that all written grievances, damage assessments, and safety complaints filed by the affected families are verified and resolved without administrative delays.
- Comprehensive Rehabilitation Packages: Providing adequate state-sponsored financial compensation to fully rebuild destroyed commercial establishments and residential homes.
- Deploying Long-Term Confidence-Building Measures: Setting up permanent multi-community peace committees in sensitive blocks of Dhalai and North Tripura districts to restore communal harmony and prevent future flare-ups.
The Commission officials accepted the detailed memorandum and assured the political delegation that a formal report on the current status of legal proceedings and relief distribution would be sought from the respective district magistrates soon.
