Banned cough syrup worth Rs 7.9 lakh was seized by the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Tripura at the Agartala railway station. A total of 1,580 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup, a controlled pharmaceutical substance, were recovered from the Deogarh Express on June 18.
Officer-in-Charge of Agartala GRP, Tapas Das, stated that the bottles were found during a routine check in Coach No. NFR-204751 and General Coach No. NFR-174070, hidden in different locations within the compartments. The entire consignment was left unclaimed.
Following legal procedures, the GRP seized the bottles as unclaimed contraband under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. An investigation has been initiated to identify the individuals or network responsible for transporting the banned cough syrup.
Preliminary estimates indicate that the market value of the seized Eskuf bottles is approximately Rs 7.90 lakh in the illicit drug trade, as the syrup is often misused for its codeine phosphate content.
Authorities suspect that the consignment was intended for illegal sale and distribution, and efforts are underway to trace its origin and end destination. The GRP is working diligently to uncover the full extent of the illegal operation and bring those responsible to justice.
