AGARTALA: To commemorate the upcoming death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the All Tripura Unorganized Workers’ Congress has announced a significant two-day state-level workshop and convention. Addressing a press conference today, Chairman Shantanu Pal detailed the organization’s plans to gather workers from across the state on May 21 and 22 to discuss labor rights, social security, and the enduring vision of the late leader.
The event is expected to serve as both a memorial and a strategic platform to address the growing grievances of the state’s unorganized labor force.
A Two-Day Agenda for Labor Empowerment
The workshop, scheduled to be held in the state capital, will focus on bridging the gap between government welfare policies and the actual beneficiaries in the informal sector.
Program Overview:
- May 21 (Day 1): Memorial & Solidarity Rally: The first day will be dedicated to honoring Rajiv Gandhi’s contributions to India’s technological and rural development. A floral tribute ceremony will be followed by a solidarity rally in Agartala, highlighting the theme of “National Integration and Labor Dignity.”
- May 22 (Day 2): State Workers’ Convention: The second day will feature a specialized workshop—the Rajya Karmi Sammelan. This session will bring together district representatives to deliberate on critical issues such as the regularization of ASHA and Anganwadi workers, wage discrepancies under MGNREGA, and workplace safety protocols.
“Workers are the Backbone”: Shantanu Pal
During the announcement, Shantanu Pal emphasized that the unorganized sector—ranging from construction workers to street vendors—remains the most vulnerable yet vital part of Tripura’s economy.
”Rajiv Gandhi ji dreamed of an India where the benefits of development reached the last person in the village. Today, our unorganized workers are struggling with inflation and lack of job security. Through this two-day program, we aim to train our workers on their legal rights and prepare a memorandum for the state government regarding pending compensations and insurance covers,” Pal stated.
Key Demands to be Highlighted
The Workers’ Congress indicated that the workshop would culminate in a formal set of demands addressed to the State Labour Department. These include:
- Safety Insurance: Mandatory insurance for electricians and construction laborers who face high risks on duty.
- Pension Schemes: Streamlining the registration process for the central and state-sponsored pension schemes for elderly unorganized workers.
- Legal Aid: Establishing a dedicated legal cell within the Workers’ Congress to assist laborers in cases of workplace harassment or wage theft.
Mobilizing Across Districts
With the event scheduled for late May, the organization has already begun its outreach programs in districts like Unakoti, Dhalai, and West Tripura. Senior Congress leaders and labor activists are expected to attend the convention on May 22 to provide guidance on the future course of the democratic movement for workers’ rights.
As the state prepares to observe the 35th death anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi as Anti-Terrorism Day, the All Tripura Unorganized Workers’ Congress is positioning itself to turn this solemn occasion into a catalyst for socio-economic change.
