In a recent development, a man has been sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for the murder of a woman in North Tripura in 2019. The press release issued by Tripura Police on Friday confirmed the conviction and sentence.
The Sessions Judge of Dharmanagar, North Tripura District, found 36-year-old Sanjoy Ghosh guilty of killing Kanchanbala Nath at her residence in East Hurua, Gowala Basti, under Dharmanagar Police Station. The tragic incident occurred on the night of June 29–30, 2019, leading to Ghosh’s arrest and subsequent charges under Sections 302 (murder) and 380 (theft in dwelling house) of the Indian Penal Code.
After a thorough investigation led by WSI Swarna Debbarma of Dharmanagar Women Police Station, a charge sheet was submitted that ultimately resulted in the court’s verdict. The court sentenced Ghosh to rigorous imprisonment for life and imposed a fine of ₹10,000 for the murder charge. In default of payment, he will face an additional six months of simple imprisonment.
Furthermore, Ghosh was also sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹5,000 for the theft charge. In default, he will serve an additional three months of simple imprisonment. The police credited the conviction to the diligent efforts of WSI Swarna Debbarma and the investigative team.
