Six undertrial prisoners managed to escape from Dharmanagar Sub-Jail at Kalikapur in North district in the early hours of Wednesday, October 1. The incident has sparked a massive manhunt across the region to track down the fugitives.
Out of the six escapees, one has already been re-arrested. Abdul Pata of Assam was apprehended after the daring jailbreak. The other five prisoners, identified as Nazim Uddin, Rahim Ali, Sunil Debbarma, Narayan Dutta, Rosan Ali, are still at large.
The jailbreak took place around 6 a.m. as the inmates were being released from their cells for morning activities. The prisoners reportedly launched a violent attack on the jail security staff, injuring one official named Bedu Mia. Mia was rushed to Dharmanagar District Hospital for treatment.
The fugitives have been charged with various crimes ranging from theft and murder to drug-related offenses. Authorities have intensified security measures at transport hubs, highways, and sensitive points to prevent the escapees from fleeing the area.
Efforts to locate and apprehend the remaining escapees are ongoing, with a focus on areas near the Assam-Tripura border and along the international boundary with Bangladesh. The public has been urged to report any suspicious activities or sightings of the wanted prisoners to the authorities.
