AGARTALA | July 4, 2026: Highlighting growing public dissatisfaction over civic infrastructure delays and rising utility costs, the Ramnagar Local Committee today organized a protest rally followed by a street corner meeting (Patha Sabha) in the Ramnagar locality of the capital. The demonstration targeted localized civic negligence and the broader financial strain on urban households due to recent utility adjustments.
The local committee framed a comprehensive charter of demands, calling on the municipal corporation and state departments to address civic amenities, structural stagnation, and utility billing matrices immediately.
Public Backlash Against Elevated Power Bills and Delayed Infrastructure
The primary focus of the street corner assembly was the sharp, abnormal increase in electricity tariffs, which residents claimed has made basic monthly household budgets unsustainable. The demonstrators demanded an immediate and unconditional rollback of the hiked energy slabs.
Additionally, speakers at the meeting expressed strong frustration over the prolonged delay in completing the high-profile Light House Project in the area. The slow pace of construction has caused persistent dust pollution and disrupted localized movement for months.
Addressing the gathering, local community organizers criticized the civic administration for ignoring fundamental municipal maintenance while imposing heavier financial burdens on taxpayers.
”The residents of Ramnagar are being squeezed from both sides by this administration. On one hand, basic civic facilities like regular drainage cleaning and clean drinking water are completely neglected. On the other hand, the electricity department slaps families with abnormally high power bills. The landmark Light House construction has been dragged out indefinitely, turning the locality into a zone of chronic dust and structural chaos. Our rally and street corner meeting today is a clear message: if these inflated power bills are not withdrawn and municipal services are not restored within a strict timeline, the citizens of Ramnagar will launch an intensive civil disobedience movement,” a senior local committee representative stated during the street assembly.
Core Civic and Welfare Demands Placed Before Authorities
During the street corner session, the Ramnagar Local Committee formally listed its primary action points aimed at urban relief:
- Rollback of Electricity Tariff Hike: Immediate cancellation of abnormal energy charges and a return to standard power utility pricing structures for domestic consumers.
- Fast-Tracking the Light House Project: Deploying additional labor and engineering resources to complete the pending Light House infrastructure without further administrative delays.
- Decentralized Drainage and Sanitation Cleaning: Instituting a strict weekly roster for municipal workers to thoroughly clean choked drains and prevent waterlogging during monsoon showers.
- Safe Drinking Water and Social Security: Ensuring the regular supply of fully purified drinking water across all sub-lanes and clearing long-pending disbursements of local monthly social allowances (Samajik Bhata) for elderly and vulnerable residents.
The street assembly concluded with youth and local volunteers vowing to monitor civic progress over the coming week, preparing to escalate their picketing at regional division offices if visible steps are not taken.
