AGARTALA: Following a series of intense electoral battles, the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) held a crucial review meeting at the Congress Bhavan today. Chaired by State President Ashish Kumar Saha, the meeting focused on analyzing the party’s performance in the recently concluded TTAADC (District Council) elections and the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election, while drafting a strategy for the impending Village Council polls.
The session saw the participation of senior leaders, including heavyweight MLA Sudip Roy Barman, district presidents, and front-ranking members of the Youth and Mahila Congress.
Analyzing the Electoral Map
The primary agenda of the meeting was to conduct a “post-mortem” of the Dharmanagar by-poll, where the BJP maintained its stronghold. The leadership discussed the challenges of contesting in a multi-cornered fight and the impact of the current political alignment in the state.
Key Deliberations:
- ADC Performance: A ward-by-ward analysis of the TTAADC elections to identify areas where the party’s vote share saw an uptick versus regions that require immediate organizational intervention.
- The Dharmanagar Factor: Evaluating the booth-level machinery in the North Tripura district and addressing the gaps that led to the by-poll setback.
- Alliance Dynamics: Discussions on the viability of future seat-sharing arrangements or tactical understandings with other opposition forces to prevent the splitting of anti-incumbency votes.
“Groundwork for Village Councils”: Ashish Kumar Saha
Addressing the media after the closed-door session, TPCC President Ashish Kumar Saha emphasized that the party is now shifting its focus entirely to the rural and tribal grassroots.
”Elections come and go, but the Congress remains the only alternative that speaks for the common citizen. We have reviewed our shortcomings in Dharmanagar and the ADC areas. Our immediate priority is the Village Council elections. We are going to the people with a message of local empowerment and a critique of the ruling government’s failed promises in the hills,” Saha stated.
Sudip Roy Barman Calls for Unity and Resilience
MLA Sudip Roy Barman reportedly urged the party workers not to be disheartened by the by-poll results. He stressed the need for “Bundle Committees” and micro-level monitoring to counter the ruling party’s influence during the Village Council polls, which are often decided by thin margins.
”The Village Council elections are about local issues—water, roads, and MNREGA wages. Our workers must become the voice of the villagers. We are restructuring our local units to ensure that Congress has a vibrant presence in every ‘Para’ (locality) of the state,” Barman added.
Roadmap to the Rural Polls
The Congress leadership has decided to launch a statewide “Jana Sampark” (Public Contact) program starting next week. The program will focus on the TTAADC areas, aiming to capitalize on the grievances regarding the delay in council funding and rural unemployment.
As the meeting concluded, the party announced that a special committee would be formed to finalize the list of candidates for the Village Council seats, prioritizing youth and local activists who have been active on the ground during the recent crises.
