Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, founder of the Tipra Motha Party, made strong allegations against the ruling BJP government during a public event on October 15. He accused the government of deliberately delaying village committee (VC) elections in Tripura, claiming that the BJP knows it would not win a single seat if the polls were held.
In his speech, Pradyot criticized both the state and central governments for their handling of land rights and funding issues in the region. He highlighted the lack of power of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) over land rights and the failure of the central government to provide promised direct funding. Pradyot also pointed out the pressure put on regional parties to align with national parties in order to receive funds, a practice he strongly disagreed with.
Drawing attention to disparities in land rights across the Northeast, Pradyot noted that in states like Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland, indigenous people have control over their land, unlike in Tripura where the District Magistrate decides land allocation. He also criticized the implementation of the TNV Accord and the lack of proper execution of the Tiprasa Accord, signed two years ago.
On the issue of education, Pradyot emphasized the need for English education for tribal children to secure better job opportunities in the future. He accused the BJP of favoring its own members’ children for English medium education, while denying the same opportunities to others.
In conclusion, Pradyot stressed the importance of tribal unity in the face of government pressure and attempts to divide the community. He vowed not to compromise on tribal rights and unity, stating that only through unity could the community protect its interests and rights.
