The Department of Animal Resources Development in Tripura has taken proactive measures to protect the state’s pig population from infectious disease outbreaks by issuing a public advisory prohibiting the transportation of pigs within and into the state until further notice.
The advisory specifies that no pigs are allowed to enter Tripura without prior approval from the department. Consignments arriving by rail or road must adhere to Rule 96 of the Transportation of Animals Rules, 2001, and undergo inspection by veterinary officers to verify their health and vaccination records before being granted permission to enter the state.
Transporters are required to notify the Director of the department at least 48 hours in advance before reaching state entry points to facilitate the inspection process. Additionally, pigs intended for commercial purposes will not be permitted entry, and all costs associated with inspections will be the responsibility of the transporter.
In the event that infected pigs are identified, they will be disposed of or removed from the state in accordance with government regulations, with the transporter bearing the responsibility. These measures have been implemented to protect Tripura’s livestock sector and ensure public health and safety in light of growing concerns about pig-borne infectious diseases.
The department’s efforts to safeguard the state’s pig population come as part of a broader strategy to mitigate the risks associated with infectious diseases and maintain the overall health and well-being of animals in Tripura. By enforcing strict regulations on pig transportation, authorities aim to prevent the spread of diseases and protect both animals and the public from potential health hazards.
