The Tripura government has announced plans to establish 10 new working women’s hostels across the state in order to provide better and more secure accommodation for women who are employed. The Director of Social Welfare and Social Education, Tapan Kumar Das, revealed that the Department of Expenditure, Government of India, has already released ₹75.24 crore out of the total project cost of ₹114 crore for this initiative.
According to Das, two of the hostels will be located in Agartala, with the remaining eight to be set up in Bodjungnagar, Dharmanagar, Kailashahar, Ambassa, Udaipur, Belonia, and Sabroom. The Tripura Housing Board has been assigned the task of executing the project, with work already underway on five hostels and the rest in the final stages of preparation. The goal is to complete all 10 hostels by the 2025-26 financial year.
Each hostel will have the capacity to accommodate 100 women and will feature amenities such as attached kitchens, bathrooms, washrooms, a gymnasium, a park, a conference hall, and 24-hour security. Special provisions will also be made for differently-abled working women.
Currently, there is only one working women’s hostel in Agartala with 46 seats, which often proves insufficient to meet the demand. The new hostels aim to provide much-needed accommodation not only for women working in industrial areas but also for domestic workers from rural areas and those employed by private firms or companies.
Officials believe that this initiative will greatly enhance the living conditions and safety of working women in Tripura, fulfilling a longstanding need for adequate hostel facilities in the state. This move is expected to have a positive impact on women’s workforce participation and overall empowerment in Tripura.
