The Tripura Police have taken action against a digital content creator, Madhabi Biswas of Pratapgarh, for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a social media post. Biswas criticized the Prime Minister for his visit to the Maa Tripura Sundari temple in Gomati district on September 22 in a video posted on September 25. She questioned the purpose of the PM’s temple visit during Navratri, stating that public funds were spent for a brief 35-minute visit and suggesting that he could have offered prayers online from Delhi instead.
The video went viral, prompting a complaint to the police from Rahul Bhattacharjee, a Yuva Morcha leader. Subrata Debnath, officer-in-charge of East Agartala police station, confirmed that a case had been registered against Biswas and an investigation was ongoing. Additionally, a complaint was filed at West Agartala police station by a leader of the Mohila Morcha (BJP), seeking court permission to register an FIR against the content creator.
The incident has sparked discussions about the boundaries of online criticism of public figures and the legal consequences of social media posts in Tripura. The authenticity of the video in question has not been independently verified by PTI. It remains to be seen how this case will unfold and what implications it may have for freedom of expression in the digital age.
