Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath made a significant announcement on Saturday, revealing that the state government is reviving the Dumboor power plant to produce 11 Mega Watt (MW) of electricity. This move is part of a larger shift toward solar energy in response to the decreasing natural gas reserves in the region.
Speaking at an awareness camp on the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in Kailasahar, Unakoti district, Nath emphasized the government’s commitment to preparing for the future while ensuring inclusive development for all citizens.
Nath explained that the Dumboor power plant used to generate 3 MW of electricity before it was damaged by floods last year. The government is now working to restore the plant with an increased capacity of 11 MW. The minister also warned about the state’s unsustainable dependence on natural gas, which is affecting power generation at various plants in Tripura.
Pointing to the importance of renewable energy sources, Nath stated, “Power can be generated from gas, air, water, and the sun. Solar energy is the way forward.” He highlighted the benefits of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which allows households to install solar panels on rooftops and open land, reducing electricity bills and providing an opportunity to earn from energy generation.
The scheme, launched on February 13, 2024, aims to promote widespread adoption of solar power in Tripura. Nath revealed the state’s goal to install solar panels in 50,000 households, collectively generating 150 MW of electricity. Currently, Tripura has approximately 10 lakh electricity consumers.
The minister stressed the importance of raising awareness about solar energy and urged citizens to embrace this environmentally friendly power source for long-term energy security. Nath reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring inclusive development for all residents of Tripura, regardless of their political affiliations.
