AGARTALA | July 1, 2026: Intensifying the political onslaught against the state administration over deteriorating security metrics for women, the Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress today staged a high-voltage demonstration outside the office of the Tripura State Commission for Women in Agartala. The protestors accused the statutory body of maintaining a partisan silence while cases of sexual assault and domestic violence continue to surge across the state.
Led by senior organizational heads and joined by hundreds of front-line Mahila Congress activists, the rally choked the approaching arterial roads before converging at the Commission’s primary gates.
Accusing Statutory Bodies of Institutional Inaction
The demonstration saw fierce sloganeering against bureaucratic apathy. Addressing the media pools during the sit-in, the Mahila Congress leadership brought up several high-profile criminal cases from the recent weeks—including the Nandanagar sexual assault and the suspicious death of Monisha Das—alleging that the Women’s Commission has failed to act as an independent pressure group on the state police department.
The opposition wing asserted that the commission has been reduced to a passive department, failing to issue suo motu notices or send independent fact-finding teams to support victim families.
”We have gathered outside the Tripura State Commission for Women today to demand accountability. This institution was built to be the shield for every woman in Tripura, but today it stands completely paralyzed by political compliance. When minor girls are being sold due to poverty in Amtali and women are being hacked in broad daylight at Orient Chowmuhani, why is the Commission silent? We demand that the Chairperson and members either actively intervene to ensure fast-tracked trials or resign from their constitutional posts. The Mahila Congress will continue to block these gates until a clear, non-partisan oversight protocol is established for women’s safety,” a frontline Mahila Congress leader stated to reporters on the field.
Key Charter of Demands Placed by the Mahila Delegation
Following an hour-long blockade at the entrance, a select delegation was permitted to enter the premises to submit a comprehensive deputation to the Commission authorities, detailing the following structural demands:
- Suo Motu Monitoring Cells: Establishing a dedicated tracking cell within the Commission to monitor the daily progress of all registered rape, domestic violence, and trafficking cases across Tripura’s eight districts.
- Inter-State Human Trafficking Probe: Issuing a direct directive to the state police to dismantle organized rings targeting vulnerable minor girls, following the recent Kanchanmala rescue case.
- Legal Aid Desks at Block Levels: Setting up operational, accessible legal-aid kiosks handled by independent lawyers at all rural development blocks to support backward rural women.
The Commission authorities accepted the memorandum and assured the delegation that they would review the specific cases brought up, promising to coordinate with the Director General of Police (DGP) to check safety parameters across urban and rural sectors.
