Tripura has achieved a significant milestone in renewable energy as it surpasses the 4-megawatt mark in solar power generation under the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has reported that 16,965 households in the state have enrolled in the scheme, with rooftop solar panels already installed on 1,210 homes.
These 1,210 households are now collectively generating 4 MW of clean energy, reducing the state’s dependence on traditional sources of power and contributing to local sustainability efforts. TSECL officials have emphasized that this accomplishment goes beyond just meeting basic electricity needs.
A total of 187 consumers have begun selling excess solar energy back to the electricity grid and have earned a total of Rs 53,514, which was directly deposited into their bank accounts. TSECL has noted that many beneficiaries are not only meeting their own electricity requirements but also selling surplus power back to the grid.
Officials have recalled that in the past, darkness would often descend on many Tripura homes at sunset, but the current initiative has changed that situation. The corporation stated, “Today, the same sun that provides light is also a source of income.”
The success of the project, according to TSECL, demonstrates that sustainable development extends beyond just electricity poles—it emanates from the lives and aspirations of the people. The solar scheme is now considered a crucial component of Tripura’s journey towards a self-reliant and cleaner energy future.
