Agartala: In a significant move to streamline the jewelry trade and adapt to evolving national standards, the Tripura Jewellery Association organized a high-level state conference and seminar today at the Sukanta Academy Auditorium. The event brought together prominent jewelry business owners, artisans, and stakeholders from across the state to discuss the future of the industry in the 2026-27 fiscal year.
The seminar was inaugurated by senior officials of the association, alongside distinguished guests from the trade and commerce sector. The gathering served as a critical platform for local jewelers to address challenges such as the fluctuating prices of gold following the latest Union Budget and the mandatory implementation of HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) numbers.

Addressing the jam-packed auditorium, the association’s leadership emphasized the need for transparency and quality assurance to maintain consumer trust. With the central government tightening regulations on the sale of hallmarked jewelry, the seminar provided a technical walkthrough for small and medium-sized jewelers to integrate digital tracking systems into their daily operations.
“Tripura’s jewelry heritage is vast, but we must align with modern global standards. This seminar is about empowering our local ‘Maniks’ (jewelers) with the knowledge of digital compliance and fair trade,” stated a spokesperson for the Tripura Jewellery Association.
Key Discussion Points:
- Impact of Union Budget 2026: A detailed analysis of the customs duty changes on gold and precious metals and how it affects the retail market in Agartala.
- HUID & Hallmarking: Experts conducted a session on the technicalities of HUID to ensure every piece of jewelry sold in Tripura meets Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) criteria.
- Artisan Welfare: Discussions on providing better social security and health benefits for the thousands of traditional artisans working in the state’s jewelry hubs.
- Digital Transformation: Encouraging jewelers to adopt digital payment methods and online inventory management to compete with national retail chains.
The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session where veteran jewelers shared their experiences with the younger generation of entrepreneurs. The association also hinted at a potential “Tripura Jewellery Expo” later this year to showcase the state’s unique craftsmanship to a national audience.
